Training effectively for the Boston Marathon is hard work. Getting in all of the key workouts during a harsh Maine winter makes it even tougher. This book chronicles the journey of a runner living in rural Maine who attempts to battle the elements while trying to put together a solid training regiment for the world's most prestigious race.

Please also be sure to check out my novelette, "Boylston Street". It's an epic tale of a Boston Marathoner who encounters a most unusual runner during the race.

Maine to Boston Marathon Training Through a New England Winter eBook J Scott Anderson

The beauty of the Boston Marathon is that...it's the Boston Marathon. But with it's April date, runners in colder climates have to do the bulk of their training in pretty formidable conditions and Maine is no exception. In this much-needed book, Jamie Anderson chronicles the ups and downs of training through the winter and how he keeps his eye on the prize of a PR at the Boston Marathon. He covers every imaginable topic (quick toilet paper fix for a snowy pit stop?) with humility, thoughtfulness, and sound analysis of his own training. This is a must-read for anyone who trains in the winter or anyone who wants to join Jamie on his journey from Maine to Boston!

Maine to Boston Marathon Training Through a New England Winter eBook J Scott Anderson Reviews

Mr. Anderson has put together a very well thought out and informative guide for training during Maine's brutal winter. He's very candid and unabashedly frank at times! I'm very much looking forward to more from this fine author.
Read this out of curiosity as Jamie coached my son on the SXC team and my son always spoke very highly of Coach Anderson. I will admit that as a non-runner, I had to Google some of the running terms (Yasso 800's), but felt that Jamie did a great job of giving us a peek inside the mind of a person who loves to run and all that entails. His description of the work that it takes just to qualify for Boston was very enlightening to me and I have to say I have a deeper respect for runners because of it. Great Read and not just for runners!
I've got one week until I run my first Boston. Run in northern Maine and qualified on the same course that the author did. Very helpful!
Great running memoir.

So, lets see Role-playing gamers, fantasy football freaks, runners, and many more... all of these belong to groups who love to talk about their craft, their hobby, and at times their obsession. And if you like to talk about running or listen to things thought about while running, and especially if you have made qualifying and then running Boston as the beacon of light on the horizon of your running adventure, then this book is a great pick up. Maine to Boston is an enjoyable read, like a nice conversation, and full of both tips and also things to let you know that those unusual things you have had to do to get in a run are shared by folks all across the nation. As a Boston qualifier who had to run his long runs on a snow-cleared, freshly salted church parking lot on a Saturday afternoon, (I did a 1/3 mile loop 60 times) with extra underwear to avoid frostbite, I certainly could feel this book.

And did I mention that it's a very cool cover.

I always love reading stories of people training for marathons or ultras, to feel the pain they go through. This however was just dull. It is just his running log. He is clearly a gifted runner since he didn't seem to feel much stress training through a winter in Maine. Everything appeared to come easily to him.
I judge books on whether I am glad I spent the time reading them, or wish I had read something else rather than wasting the time on a book. THis for me was a waste of time.
Mr. Anderson has done a remarkable job with his first book. A great combination of narrative (with and especially poignant piece on the art of crapping in the woods) and great journal entries that describe his Maine winter training for the Boston Marathon. Great details and tips for runners of all ages and abilities and a great motivator to get out on the road, or preferably the trail. Highly recommend.
