Cooks Crooks and a Corpse Baker Girls Cozy Mystery Book 1 edition by Maria Grazia Swan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I love the way Maria Grazia Swan pulls me into Monica's story. Word by word, page by page I had to know what was happening next. While the mystery was interesting and shadows the lives of Monica and her friends, it was Monica's character that captivated me. Her world is so intertwined with that of others that I am now also dying to know more about them too. The book is about half mystery, half chick lit, but that suits me because it is always the character story that matters the most. Speaking of characters, one of my favorites was Dior, a Great Dane rescued by Monica's friend and landlord.

Although about to earn her real estate license, Monica works as the owner's assistant and often stands in for her to fend off unwanted visits from Sunny's spoiled daughter and to show property in her boss's absence. On her free time Monica earns a bit of money as an catering assistant working for Brenda, the aunt of her ex-husband. There is so much bubbling under the surface for these women that it is no wonder that it spills over in the form of a dead body at an open house for one of the houses sold by Sunny to a family friend and catered by Brenda. Naturally the finger of suspicion points at Sunny, Brenda and Monica who had words with the man shortly before his death.

I requested and read an advanced readers' copy of Cooks, Crooks and a Corpse, but this review is completely voluntary. I always review books that I love. I also bought a personal copy of the book.

Cooks Crooks and a Corpse Baker Girls Cozy Mystery Book 1 edition by Maria Grazia Swan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

As an opening for a new series the book succeeds since I will be looking for the next book. A quick read and an interesting afternoon to meet a new heroine and the cast of characters in the place called Phoenix. There is also the promise of an exciting forbidden love to look forward to. Should be a series hit!
From beginning to end, I was engaged by this mystery. The deaths were unusual, and the characters realistic. I enjoyed all of them and was pleased by the plotline resolutions which were surprising. I'm looking forward to reading more of the series and am glad that Ms. Swan decided to write this cosy mystery style. She's done well with it.
The writing is not bad, but this author has mistaken leaving everything hanging for leaving a few things to be carried into her next book. If she were in my critique group we would have said, "this is really good, but go home and finish it before you publish." The book just...ends. With nothing resolved. As a writer, I understand the desire to have something to carry into your next book, but ALL the answers? No.
If you have not read "Cooks, Crooks and a Corpse" by Maria Grazia Swan, I recommend this book for a refreshing and entertaining story with just enough mystery and love to keep you turning the pages to see what Monica and her hot pink Italian Fiat do next. (I have read this book several times and enjoyed each.) Ms. Swan gives the reader little tips along the pages to solve the mystery, but some lead to blind alleys and other surprises. This book is the first in the Baker Girls Series, and I eagerly await Book Number 2. I recommend "Cooks, Crooks and a Corpse" without reservation for the whole family. And by the way. Maria Grazia Swan's recipes taste good, too.
This is a very good mystery. It has a lot of clues and suspects. Monica is a realtor's assistant and helps her ex-mother-in-law's catering business. The case begins with a P.I., who tried to break into her aunt's house, dying at, Tristan, a rich man's party at a Monica is catering. Then, Monica realizes her boss and her aunt are keeping secrets from her not to mention her ex, Tommy, is hanging around. The characters are well written and the humor brings out the story.
In this fun new series we are introduced to Monica Baker, an independent young woman from Italy who now lives in Arizona.
Monica loves her cute little pink Fiat 500 and even manages to stuff her Aunt Brenda's Great Dane into it.
We also meet interesting supporting and leading characters including more than one love interest.
The mysteries (yes, more than one intertwined) are resolved by the end of the book, so no cliff-hangers.
However, what will happen to Monica's love-life remains to be seen.
I pre-ordered the second book in the series, "Foods, Fools and a Dead Psychic" and am looking forward to reading it.
I am a big fan of Maria Grazia Swan's books! This was with new characters and I really enjoyed it! Monica, Tristan, Brenda, Tommy, and many more! I wish the book was a little longer, but it was well plotted and the characters well drawn. I had a very positive feeling at the end and hope that a second book with these characters comes along soon. I want to know more about Tristan and how Brenda will fare, as well as what will happen with Monica.
